REQUIEM

When I was a child I was fascinated by the stars.

I remember asking my grandfather what those sparkling lights in the sky were. His explanation had little to do with science–as a four-year-old, I wasn’t ready for astronomy lessons.

Instead, he explained his belief (hope?) that they represented keyholes to heaven where those who had travelled there could watch over the loved ones they left behind on earth.

If that is true, there’s a new keyhole in heaven this week.

Rocky, the previous Chief of Security at Ft. Mitchell no longer patrols the perimeter each night at sundown.

The ones left behind miss him.

But, I have a feeling he’s looking down and keeping watch.

Just as he always did.
