UNDER THE LIGHT OF THE MIRROR BALL

Have I mentioned before that I’m a reality performance show junkie?

Well I am. And last night I got a double fix with the debut of the 2011 Dancing With the Stars and the Sing Off. Thank God for the DVR. I happily fast-forwarded through commercials and switched between the two channels.

DWTS looks like it will have an interesting season at least. With the exception of a trio who I hope will be in the bottom three–Ron Artest, Elizabetta Canalis and Rob Kardashian–I found the group entertaining, charming and potentially talented dancers.

Chynna Phillips and J.R. Martinez provided the most polished performances. Hope Solo and Ricki Lake were surprisingly graceful. Kristin Cavallari gave an okay performance, I wasn’t that impressed. Then, despite an attack of nerves and maybe over-thinking, David Arquette was his usual slightly goofy but totally charming self while showing some real ballroom potential.

And what about Nancy Grace, she showed a fun side of her personality I’ve never seen before.

Which performances were my favorites?  I have to say Chaz Bono and Carson Kressley. Maybe not the best dancers–yet–but they showed off some decent moves and a lot of personality.

As much as I would like to see Ron Artest be the first to go–I’m a Dallas Maveriicks’ fan after all–I think Elizabetta will be the first causalty.

As far as the Sing-Off, I didn’t see anyone that impressed me as much as Street Corner Symphony did last season but it’s early yet. I really like the judges on this show. I missed Nicole Scherzinger but Sara Bareilles was a good replacement.

All in all it was a good premier night. I enjoyed both shows immensely.
